Visas and Vaccinations

Visa Requirements

It is very important to hold the correct type of visa for the voyage intended. Failure to do so, may result in being allowed to board the vessel at your port of embarkation or payment of heavy fines on arrival to your destination country.  

The information given below is for guidance only. Visa requirements will vary depending on the nationality of the passport holder. Visa requirements may also change at short notice so you must check with the appropriate embassy on their latest visa requirements for entering the country as passenger on a cargo ship. Cargo Ship Voyages will give you advice on visas, but it is the passenger’s sole responsibility to apply for and hold the correct visas before the commencement of the voyage.  

Australia
Tourist visas mandatory for passengers holding passports which do not have visa waiver agreements.  

China
Tourist visas are mandatory for all passengers. If the ship is calling in various ports in China, a multiple entry visa is required. Visas can be applied for through specialised visa agents  European Union For non-EU passengers, Schengen visa where applicable  

India
Tourist visas are mandatory for all passengers. Multiple entry visas required with a validity of 6 months.  

Indonesia
Tourist visas are mandatory for all passengers.  Nationals of the following countries: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Germany, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Ireland, Luxembourg, Liechtenstein, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Hungary, UK and USA– will be able to apply for a purchased visa on arrival in Indonesia. Passengers who need visas issued upon arrival are kindly requested to inform the captain upon boarding. Payment for the visa will be taken by the authorities on board the ship. Citizens of all other European countries not listed above will be required to apply for a visa with the next Indonesian embassy or consulate in charge before entering Indonesia.  

Vietnam
Tourist visas are mandatory for all passengers. The port agent may be able arrange for visas issued upon arrival at passengers’ expense. The visa fee of USD 75,00 payable in cash to the representative of VINATRANS at the time of arrival. Passengers who need visas issued upon arrival are kindly requested to inform the captain upon boarding. Passengers may also apply for 3 month tourist visas at the Vietnam embassies in their countries of origin.  

USA
Tourist visas are mandatory for all passengers as entries to the US by cargo ship do not qualify for the US VISA WAIVER PROGRAM. US visas are granted after attending an interview at the consular section. The whole process may take from a few weeks to a few months depending on the country of application. Therefore, visas should be applied for at least three months prior to projected departure date.  Note: Currently issued tourist visas expire after 10 years. Old unlimited tourist visas will be cancelled by local immigration officers at the first port of call in the USA and will consequently no longer be valid for further US port calls during your voyage. Therefore, passengers holding old unlimited US visas need to apply for a new visa.

Vaccinations

As a guide, yellow fever and cholera vaccinations are compulsory for any voyage involving a port of call or transit through tropical areas. Depending on your voyage we will be able to give you guidance on the vaccinations required.
